Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature (2 sticks)
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp almond extract
  • Orange and black sanding sugar for rolling

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350ºF (175ºC). In a small bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer until creamy, about 1 minute. Add the egg and both extracts; mix for another 30 seconds.
  3. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients by mixing on low speed or using a spatula.
  4. Pour colored sugar into two separate bowls—one with orange and one with black. Use a cookie scoop to form balls of dough, then roll each ball in the colored sugar.
  5. Place the cookies on a silicone-lined baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Bake for 12-14 minutes or until edges are golden.
